3 More Sources

I have been looking for more sources for my paper on Same sex marriage this week. I think every time I told myself I needed to get on the computer to do so I got a headache. So I wanted to make sure I got the results I need.  I decided to look everywhere I could so I could try to find more to choose from.  I did start with the database's that Heather put in our assignment sheet for this week.  I didn't have any l luck them.   I think I should change that I found articles that I would have liked to read, but I would have paid to read them.  I felt like that was unfair.  Do I go back to the database's that are located on the Front Range Ewolf page.  I  played with the wording in my searches.  I then also to broaden my horizon to more options.  I have found if this do I can find the items I need on Academic Search Premier.

I found an article titled "Marriage and Politics".
This article was really interesting as compared the two.  It talks about how marriage is a legal contract, between two parties and the state they live in. They say it shouldn't  matter the sex of each person in the contract.  It also responds to the argument  that if same-sex marriage be legal then it damage the heterosexual marriages.  Why would it matter what your neighbor is doing, and how would that hurt your marriage? This article also talks about the fact that the young adults today waiting longer to get married.  They have seen what divorce can do and they are living with a partner before they take the big step of marriage. May be if we can come together as a nation and allow same-sex marriages it will help those that are not "out of the closet" be free from living a life they don't want to.  Then maybe our divorce rate will be lowered.

I was determined to find some something else that would help make my paper POP. So I went to just "Google" find something I could use.  I found a great website called "ProCon.org" I found just what I was looking for.  I found a list of of pro and con quotes.  It was exactly what I was looking for.  I don't know how I could make a  summary of them. I have about 40 for each side.  I only plan to use one or two of them.  I am glad I found them, and that I didn't just continue to look for the database's. I wanted something different to use.

I found an article by Heather Macintosh, title "Same-Sex marriage in Canada: The Impact of Legal Marriage On The First Cohort of Gay and Lesbian Canadians To Wed."  This article talks about why gay couples want to be able to get married.  They want to be able to celebrate their commitment to each other, and gain the same  benefits of  heterosexual couples.  Is that too much to ask?  ( I think not).  In the world today marriage is a most significant communal ceremony of belonging. She states that most skeptics about same-sex marriage look at the negative meanings they attach to the institution itself. She then takes many points like Taxes, adoption of a child, and regulations of becoming a couple.  She goes into detail into those topics and helps make her point to show that gay marriage would not be bad for the United States to change.

FINDING SOURCES!

Easily Mused - Google searchWell, I can say I had a "what in the heck was I thinking" moment as I was trying to find some sources for my research question.  Even though I do like my question, it was more challenging to find the information I needed to, to be able to answer my question. I first went to "Google Scholar " and with many searches,  I did find plenty of articles on why same sex should be legal and how it is against their rights to not be able to marry.  Likewise, I also found plenty articles against gay marriage because of religious and/or personal beliefs that is going against God and the Bible.

The process of not finding articles with the right content made me think about changing my research question.  But I didn't give up, after changing my wording MANY times I did find an article that I could use.

My first article is from Springerlink, a data base that I found from "Google Scholar".  It talks about Norway when they changed their marriage laws and allowed same-sex marriages in 1993.  But because they are unsure of how it will affect any children growing up in  same-sex marriages, they allow them to become parents. After much consideration, and Studies done by the Ministry of Children, Equality and Social Inclusion, the Country of Norway decided to  let Same-sex couples adopt children. This law took went in to affect on 1 Jan. 2009. As of today  Norway is considered on of the most liberal countries in the world. (Hollekium)

They took polls across the nation to see what the people wanted.  They found out most women were  in favor of same-sex couples being able to adopt.  And only 58% of men were in favor.  After a vote it passed with a landslide.  They have found even though that the gay and lesbian have changed the shape of parenting, but the welfare of the children is want matters. So far there is a non-discrimination for the couples and children in society. Society as a hole has been very open to these kinds of families.  But they article  was only written 11 months after the new law went in to affect, there is not much on the long term development.

After find this article I was very happy, but with much my dismay, I couldn't find another one that I need to be able to answer my research question.  So I took Ballenger's advice and went to the Public Library to get help finding my second source. I have not been to a public library since my boys were little, and went most of the time for them not myself.  I need to use this building more.  I find it relaxing, even if I am stress out about homework.  I got help from a great librarian that led me to Journal of Family Issues.

This Journal goes in to great detail about how the Netherlands changed their marriage laws.  The led the way in changing and permitting same-sex partnerships in 1989.  Yes 1989, Wow, I had no idea that was done so long ago. They allowed marriages in 2001.  The Netherlands were also concerned with the children and how these values would have end up changing the ties between people and institutions.  They  have found churches have been very open to mind to this.  Even though most churches don't agree with it they feel it is sin, but they love the sinner, and do not judge. This has kept a open attitudes towards gays, and has help them feel more accepted in society.

In a study it was found that people with a higher educational level tend to have a weaker objection to same-sex marriage. Another product of accepting same-sex marriage is the characteristics of the family. The mother has most the influence on the children, and it her attitude about gay marriage that will be passed on to the children.

So far in society in the Netherlands, they have not found anything that indicates that same-sex marriage should be over turned.  So far the people of the Netherlands have accepted homosexuality, and with the law it helps to open the lines of communication in the family unit.

So to answer my question, I would say so far in the countries there is little data to the how same-sex marriage has changed socitey.  With this information I would conlude then  it has had very little influence on  society.  I would think if it did infact some illeffects on their way of life in these counties you better beleive there would be more journals and papers it.  I would then not had a hard time finding some sourse for this paper.

Analyzing a Photo

There are 11 countries that are allowing same sex marriage.  The Netherlands was the first in April 2001 they started allowing same sex marriage.  Other countries followed, Spain, Belgium, Sweden, Iceland, and South Africa just to name a few.  Most of these countries do not shock me at all.  I don't like judging, but these countries seem very liberal to me.  They are more accepting of new ideas, and more free when it come sex and another way of life.  We Americans are very prude when it comes to sex.

This photo is from Pairs, France it shows demonstrations that are taking place this week as the French leaders are debating of adopting same sex marriage. I find it very funny of all the countries I would have thought that France had already would be allowing same sex marriage.  These demonstrators are for same sex marriage.  France to me is very liberal, and when it comes to sex, and freely showing skin they are one the first countries that comes to my mind. The rainbow flag has been used in history as a sign of diversity, hope and yearning.  But now days the rainbow flag is a sign of "Gay Pride".

On the other side of the street was demonstrators that are against passing the law that would allow gay couples to marry.  They looked just as excited and wanted to share their message of what a "Family" should be one man and one woman.

I don't know why but I didn't think that demonstrations like this would take place in France.  It looks something that would take place here in America.  It is right as all people have it to try to let their voice be heard by the law makers of the countries.

Topics Versus Research Questions

My first research question about my topic of Same Sex marriage is:
Are there any countries that have had success with allowing same sex marriage?

If I had to respond to this question base on my gut emotions or experiences would be yes.  There are countries that have had good success with letting gay and lesbian couples get married. I am sure these countries have prevailed and it has helped in society accept it as a whole.  I also think these countries  have not had a breakdown in society either. Just because these countries have allowed same sex marriage it doesn't mean now people are doing anything they weren't doing before.  Every society has sick people who chose to do perverted things.  Sadly its way of life and there is no changing that. But marriage is about love and devotion to each other and everyone should be allowed to show that to each other.

I believe the other view to my question is just because they have let gay and lesbian couples get married doesn't mean that these countries have a good society.  Also just because these couples are  allowed to get married doesn't mean it has made these countries stronger. That if the United States allows gay and lesbian couples to get married this will break down the "family".  Some would say that  this is not a marriage, because marriage is a covenant  between a man and a woman.  They would also say that by allowing these couples to get married it will open the door to more perverted ideas.  People will want to be able to marry their animals.  But this has already gone on and this is a whole other issue, by allowing same sex marriage does allow the other.

I would like to find out about the society in these countries did they accept it easily? Is there any data that can help support making it change here?  I would like to also know how has it affected the society in those countries.  I will also research what was the impact on society after same sex marriage became legal.
